Started Carrying Pen Gear Markers—and Now I Miss Them Every Day
The marker started as a desk thing. It lived in a mug with a few pens that worked most of the time and a couple that didn’t. I only picked it up when something needed to be labeled quickly, something temporary, a box going to the garage, a cable I’d forget about in a week. Then one day I stuck it in my pocket while moving stuff around the house and it stayed there. Not on purpose. It just didn’t get taken out at the end of the day like the rest of the odds and ends.
It’s a different kind of carry than a pen. A pen feels expected, almost polite. A marker feels a little extra, like you’re assuming you’ll need to make something obvious. Thicker line, more commitment. You don’t absentmindedly write a phone number with it unless you have to. It leaves a mark that’s harder to ignore, which is probably why I kept it around.
I don’t use it every day. Some days it just rides along, shifting slightly when I sit down, reminding me it’s there by the way it presses against the fabric when I bend. It takes up more room than it should for how often I actually use it. There are mornings when I leave it on the dresser on purpose, telling myself I’ll travel lighter, and by mid-afternoon I’m looking for it out of habit more than need.
When I do use it, it’s rarely for anything important. Writing “FRAGILE” on a box that isn’t especially fragile. Marking a date on a bag in the freezer. Drawing a quick arrow on a piece of cardboard so I remember which side faces up. Small things that don’t justify carrying a whole extra object, except they kind of do when they come up often enough.
It also changes how I treat other things. If I have the marker, I stop trying to keep track of details in my head. I’ll just write on whatever’s nearby. A scrap of paper, the inside of a flap, sometimes even the object itself if it’s temporary enough. Without it, I hesitate more. I look for a pen, or I decide it’s not worth writing down, which usually means I’ll forget it later.
There’s a slight annoyance to it, too. It doesn’t clip as neatly as a pen. It has a way of rotating in the pocket so the cap ends up at an odd angle. Sometimes I worry about it coming loose, even though it never has. Every once in a while I’ll find a faint smudge on my fingers and wonder if it’s leaking, then realize it’s from something else entirely.
It’s one of those items that drifts between places. Pocket for a week, then it lives in the car for a while, then back to the desk, then somehow back in the pocket again. Each time it returns, it feels slightly justified, like it earned its spot by being missed once or twice. Not dramatically missed, just enough to notice the gap.
I think that’s the real marker, not the ink but the habit it leaves behind. You start seeing small moments where a bold line would help, and once you’ve acted on that a few times, it’s hard to go back to not having the option. Even if most days it just sits there, adding a little bulk, waiting for something that needs to be made obvious.
