I Carry a Waterproof Battery Capsule in My Everyday Gear for Peace of Mind

My flashlight had died on me in a parking garage. Not dramatic, just inconvenient enough to make me stand there tapping the switch like that might change something. I had a spare battery at home. I always have spares somewhere. Just not when I need them.

The capsule showed up the next day. Not because I’d planned it out, more like I was tired of that specific kind of friction. Loose batteries rolling around in a bag always felt temporary, like I’d clean it up later and never did. This gave it a place. A small, defined solution to a small, recurring problem.

At first I carried it in my pocket. That lasted maybe three days. It wasn’t heavy, but it had a way of sitting wrong, like a coin that never settled flat. It bumped into my keys, made everything feel slightly crowded. I found myself shifting it around at red lights, moving it to the other pocket, then back again. Eventually it got demoted to the bag.

In the bag, it disappeared in a different way. Not lost, just out of mind. Which is kind of the point, I guess. It’s there for the version of me that runs into the same dead battery problem again. But that version doesn’t show up often enough to justify thinking about it daily.

Every once in a while I’ll come across it when I’m digging for something else. It has a reassuring weight, like a reminder that I tried to solve something in advance. I’ll unscrew it, check the battery, make sure it hasn’t corroded or drained. Then it goes right back in, sealed up, waiting for a situation that may or may not happen.

There’s a small cost to carrying it. Not just the physical space, but the mental bookkeeping. Another object to keep track of, another thing that needs to be put back where it belongs after use. If I actually use the battery, now I have an empty capsule to remember to refill. If I don’t, it just rides along indefinitely, quietly justifying itself by existing.

I’ve taken it out a couple times when I was trying to simplify things. Lighter bag, fewer little containers. It always feels good for a few days. Then I hit that same kind of minor inconvenience again. Not always a dead flashlight. Sometimes it’s something adjacent, like realizing I don’t have a backup for a small, specific failure. The capsule makes its way back in after that, like a habit that never quite leaves.

It’s not an essential item. Most days it does nothing. But it smooths out a particular edge in my routine, one that only shows up occasionally but tends to show up at the worst time. And for whatever reason, that’s enough to keep it around, tucked into a pocket I don’t think about until I need to.
