Carrying a Titanium Beard Comb in My EDC Travel Kit Anyway
The comb ended up there almost by accident. It came home from a trip where I’d packed more carefully than usual, one of those carry-ons where every item has a reason because you don’t want to deal with checking a bag. It slipped into the small zip pocket with a charger and stayed there the whole weekend. I used it once in a hotel bathroom with bad lighting, mostly just to feel like I’d done something about the travel hair. When I got back, it didn’t go back into a drawer. It just migrated.
It’s lighter than it looks, but it has that cold, dense feel when you first pick it up in the morning. I keep it in the same pocket as my phone sometimes, which doesn’t quite make sense. The edges are smooth enough that it hasn’t scratched anything, but I still separate them without thinking. It ends up riding along the seam of the pocket, almost disappearing until I sit down and it presses sideways against my thigh. Not uncomfortable, just noticeable enough that I adjust it a few times a day.
I don’t use it much. That’s the part that makes it questionable. A couple times a week, maybe. Usually in a bathroom at work after I’ve washed my hands and caught a glimpse of myself that feels slightly out of sync. Or sitting in the car before walking into a store, using the rearview mirror for a quick pass that probably doesn’t change much. It’s not like brushing your hair where the difference is obvious. It’s more about resetting things so they feel intentional again.
There are days I forget it’s there entirely. Then there are days when I reach for it twice before lunch, usually when the weather does something weird. Humidity makes everything puff out and drift. Cold air makes it stiff in a different way. Those are the days it earns its spot without me thinking about it too much.
It did spend a week on my desk at one point. I took it out of my pocket while sitting down, meaning to put it back before I left, and didn’t. It stayed near my keyboard, off to the right, like a paperclip that got promoted. I used it more that week, but in a different way. Less about fixing something before going out, more like fidgeting between emails. That made me like it less, oddly. It started to feel like clutter instead of something I carried for a reason. When I put it back in my pocket the next Monday, it felt more appropriate again, like it needed that bit of friction to justify itself.
There’s a small satisfaction in knowing it’s there even when I don’t use it. Not in a preparedness sense, nothing dramatic like that. Just the sense that one minor annoyance has an answer if I want it. Same category as a small light in a bag or a pen that actually writes well. You don’t need it often, but when you do, you don’t have to improvise.
I’ve taken it out of my rotation a couple times to see if I’d miss it. The first day, nothing. Second day, still nothing. By the third or fourth, I’d catch myself in a window reflection or feel that unevenness again and have the brief thought of reaching for it. Not a strong need, just a tiny interruption in the flow of the day. That’s usually when it ends up back in the pocket.
It’s not essential. It adds a little bulk, another object to shift around when I sit, another thing to remember when I empty my pockets at night. But it also smooths over those small, almost invisible moments where you become aware of yourself in a way you didn’t plan to. And for something that thin and easy to forget, that seems to be enough reason to keep carrying it, at least for now.
